The story has been started from February 2020 when I decided to cut out refined sugar from my diet. I was addicted to the sweets and chocolate before I decided to started the elimination diet due to health issue. Before that, sweets made me feel more relaxed during the stressful, extremely busy days as an employee in foreign country.

It was a hard decision to make, but I knew I had to do it for the sake of my health. At first, I was worried that I would miss out on the sweetness of all the delicious treats I had grown so accustomed to. Sweets like cookies, chocolate, and other desserts had become such a big part of my life that I couldn’t imagine life without them.

I was so determined to make this change that I was willing to do whatever it took to make sure I was successful. Initially, I thought it would be easy. Little did I know that it would take a lot of dedication, determination and self-control to make this happen.  The first thing I had to do was to completely rid my pantry of all refined sugar products. That meant saying goodbye to all of my favorite treats – cookies, cakes, chocolate and more. It was hard to let them go, but I was committed to making this change.

The next step was to find suitable alternatives to all of the foods I was accustomed to eating. This took some research, as I had to read a lot of books, journals, taking some online courses about self management, diet and healthy life style and read food labels carefully to make sure I was eating the right things. I also had to get creative in the kitchen, as I was now cooking with healthier ingredients like raw and fresh fruits, vegetables, grass fed meat, etc.

The final step was to actually stick to my plan. This was the hardest part, as I was now surrounded by all kinds of temptations. I had to have a lot of self-discipline and focus to resist going back to my old, unhealthy habits.

Giving up refined sugar was not easy but I wanted to take control of my health and this was the best way to do it.  At first, I was worried about missing out on all the guilty pleasures that come with eating sweets, chocolate and cookies, but I soon realized that I was gaining a lot more than I was losing.

I felt an immediate surge of energy and clarity in my mind and I was sleeping better at night. Before that, I couldn’t sleep well at night, always woke up every two hours. Besides that, I used to feel sluggish and exhausted all the time, even after a full night’s sleep. At this moment, I was also able to maintain a healthy weight without feeling deprived from not eating these treats.

Although I was able to feel the benefits of cutting out refined sugar, there were still moments when I felt a strong craving for something sweet. This is when I decided to explore healthier alternatives like making my own desserts with natural sweeteners like dates. This allowed me to satisfy my sweet tooth without compromising my health.  After almost three years of cutting out refined sugar, I can proudly say that I have been able to lead a healthier lifestyle. I have more energy throughout the day without feeling sleepy in the middle of the day. I felt that my overall health has improved including the hormon imbalance issues.

My journey of cutting out refined sugar has been a challenging yet rewarding one. It has taught me the importance of being mindful of the food I put in my body and how to make healthier choices. Even though I have had to say goodbye to the sweets, chocolate and cookies that I used to eat, I am grateful for the knowledge and understanding that I have gained.

After almost three years of cutting out refined sugar, I have lost some things, but in turn, I have gained a lot. I am also better educated about the foods I eat, and I am better able to make healthier choices in my life. I am very proud of my accomplishment, and I am glad I made the decision to cut out refined sugar.
